NFL PICKS, SURVIVAL and MORE

Sign up to make picks in football games this year…. Both the picks and survival will run thru the playoffs. I’m using a 3 Strike policy on the setup of this year’s Survival… if more than 1 team survives, the least number of strikes wins…. you probably already got an email about this if you’re in on my list. if you got two its because you played last year!

My AXA League Keeper Team

I think I have a pretty good team, drafted a week ago sunday. I dropped Jay Bruce (my last pick) and replaced him for Adam Jones… I just see Jones contributing sooner than Bruce. My infield is solid. We were allowed to keep 10 players from the previous season. This is the league’s second year of existence.

C- Russell Martin
1B- Mark Teixeira, Ryan Garko
2B- Chase Utley, Plácido Polanco
SS- Jimmy Rollins
3B- David Wright, Aramis Ramírez, Alex Gordon
OF- Alfonso Soriano, Chris Young, Jeff Francoeur, Brad Hawpe, Adam Jones
SP- C.C. Sabathia, John Lackey, James Shields, Adam Wainwright, Matt Garza, Rich Harden, Ubaldo Jiménez, Yovani Gallardo (DL)
RP- J.J. Putz, Rafael Betancourt, Brian Wilson, CJ Wilson

My MLB Keeper Team Update

My keeper team jumped up to first after months and months and months of holding onto third.. how you like them apples??…Trading away BONDERMAN for Teixeira was the biggest move I made this summer… This is the same team i traded away players like Otsuka for Willis then moved Willis and 2 others for Soriano. Kazmir Ibanez Lincecum, a few others were all pick ups..

Key Trades for Tough Gazabees
8-5-07 Jeremy Bonderman (Det – SP) to Holebeaters for Mark Teixeira (Atl – 1B)
6-19-07 Shane Victorino (Phi – OF), Rich Hill (ChC – SP), and Dontrelle Willis (Fla – SP) to Dodger Blue for Alfonso Soriano (ChC – OF)

Here’s current lineup update (*denotes keeper)

My Keeper Team (I can keep 10)
C- *Martin
1b- *Teixeira
2b- *Utley
SS- *Rollins
3b- *Wright
OF- *Soriano, *Francoeur, Ibanez
Util- *ARamirez
BN- Hermida, Weeks, Chris Young

SP *CCSabathia, *Lackey, Lincecum, Kazmir, Wainwright
RP Putz, Saito, Valverde, Benoit

I have to keep ARAM over Lincecum figuring I will just draft pitchers higher than normal since my 10 keepers are like the shit!..

NBA Injuries

This season has been completely insane with the amount of injuries to star quality players. Usually one or two stars get hurt a year and miss significant time, but this year it seems like every team has someone hurt. Here is a rundown of a few of the injuries so far this season. The big ones that are affecting my fantasy teams are Josh Smith and Yao Ming (in addition to the Melo suspension which is killing me). Odom should be back soon, but the Lakers have been doing good either way. Milwaukee traded for Earl Boykins and Julius Hodge a couple days ago to relieve some tenderness.

Shaquille O’Neal, Miami — Left knee surgery, out 4-6 weeks
Peja Stojakovic, New Orleans — Lower back surgery, out 2-3 months
Bobby Simmons, Milwaukee — Right ankle surgery, out for season
Lamar Odom, LA Lakers — Sprained right knee, out 3-6 weeks
Paul Pierce, Boston — Left foot stress reaction, out 2-3 weeks
Rashard Lewis, Seattle — Torn tendon, right hand, out 2-3 months
Yao Ming, Houston — Fractured right tibia, out 6-8 weeks
Nenad Krstic, New Jersey — Torn left ACL, out for season
Josh Smith, Atlanta — Back surgery, out 4-6 weeks
Chris Paul, New Orleans — Sprained right ankle, out 4-6 weeks
Brevin Knight, Charlotte — Adominal surgery, out 4-6 weeks
Chauncey Billups, Detroit — Strained right calf, out 2 weeks
Jason Richardson, Golden State — Broken right hand, out 2 months
Gerald Wallace, Charlotte — Separated shoulder, out 7-10 days
Kwame Brown, LA Lakers — Sprained ankle, out 3-4 weeks
Michael Redd, Milwaukee — Strained patellar tendon in left knee
Mo Williams, Milwaukee — Sprained left shoulder, out 2-3 weeks
Tony Allen, Boston — Torn knee ligaments, out for season

Mostly Better

Almost 100%.

Looks like most of my teams won too. That’s good.

Judge rules statistics not intellectual property of MLB

Posted: Tuesday August 8, 2006 7:07PM; Updated: Tuesday August 8, 2006 7:30PM

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Fantasy baseball leagues are allowed to use player names and statistics without licensing agreements because they are not the intellectual property of Major League Baseball, a federal judge ruled Tuesday.

Baseball and its players have no right to prevent the use of names and playing records, U.S. District Court Judge Mary Ann Medler in St. Louis ruled in a 49-page summary judgment.

St. Louis-based CBC Distribution and Marketing Inc. filed a lawsuit against Major League Baseball Advanced Media, MLB’s Internet wing, after CBC was denied a new licensing agreement with the baseball players’ association giving it the rights to player profiles and statistics.

Major League Baseball claimed that intellectual property laws and so-called “right of publicity” make it illegal for fantasy leagues to make money off the identities and stats of professional players.

But even if the players could claim the right of publicity against commercial ventures by others, Medler wrote, the First Amendment takes precedent because CBC, which runs CDM Fantasy Sports, is disseminating the same statistical information found in newspapers every day.

“The names and playing records of major league baseball players as used in CBC’s fantasy games are not copyrightable,” Medler wrote. “Therefore, federal copyright law does not pre-empt the players’ claimed right of publicity.”

The ruling brings some relief to more than 300 businesses that run online fantasy leagues and have awaited the outcome of the lawsuit. In fantasy sports leagues, fans draft major leaguers and teams win or lose based on the statistical success of the actual players in major league games.

It wasn’t immediately clear what impact the ruling would have on existing agreements, such as the ones MLB has with CBS Sportsline.com, Yahoo Inc., ESPN.com and others. MLB also may appeal.

“My thought today is this ruling is pretty strong but if MLB wants to fight it they have the funds to do it,” said Jeff Thomas, founder and CEO of the fantasy site SportsBuff.com and president of the Fantasy Sports Trade Association.

Thomas said SportsBuff.com’s online fantasy baseball leagues have tried for years to reach agreements with MLB, but were unsuccessful and carried on without them.

Major League Baseball Advanced Media had just received the ruling this afternoon and was in the process of reviewing it, said spokesman Jim Gallagher.

“We need to talk to our partners, the Major League Baseball Players Associations, before we have anything more to say,” he said.

Baseball’s refusal to give CBC a contract for the 2005 season came as the league was making exclusive statistics licensing agreements in the fantasy sports marketplace that has grown to more than 15 million players.

Like many other fantasy baseball leagues, CBC had a licensing agreement with the MLBPA from 1995 through the 2004 season and paid 9 percent of gross royalties to the association. The company now believes it shouldn’t have to pay for the right to use statistics.

Rudy Telscher, who represents CBC, said both sides had asked for a summary judgment before the case was scheduled to go to trial next month.

“Once you’ve won this here the odds are really good for us when MLB appeals,” Telscher said. “I think once this issue is decided by an appellate court it’s unlikely that other sports will try to take this to the court again.”

Fantasy sports has grown at a rate of up to 10 percent each year, according to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association.

MLB had 19 license agreements in 2004, according to MLB Advanced Media, and just seven last season after a $50 million agreement with the players association giving baseball exclusive rights to license statistics.

Many of the smaller fantasy businesses, such as CBC, say they were cut out of the agreement.

Glenn Colton, a New York lawyer who wrote a friend of the court brief for the Fantasy Sports Trade Association, said the statistics licensing issue is critical to the industry.

“The idea on MLB’s part is if you can scare all of the little companies out of the market,” Colton said, “you can collect more money.”

7/4 Baseball Team Report

Here is how all my teams from my top 6 yahoo ids are doing. Each graphic represents a different id. The bottom four in each one are midseason leagues and a lot is yet to be determined there. I won’t post the other 4×4 cause its not as cool as this 6×8 and cause its all midseason so maybe at a later date.

A Couple Things

Okay so a couple things here…

1). The Tour de France just started. It’s awesome. I love it. I really want to try and watch it this year even without Lance Armstrong in it. He won 7 in a row and it was great to actually watch a good percentage of the last couple years. The Tour is on OLN in the mornings and that is real good for me. I usually have all morning and most of the early afternoon before I have to go to work, so that works out. The big big news this year is that Ivan Basso of Italy, Jan Ullrich of Germany, Francisco Mancebo of Spain, and others were all banned from the Tour de France a day before it started (yesterday) because of their involvement in a doping investigation in Spain. So with Lance out, and these favorites to win in Lance’s absense also out, it’s anyone’s race!

2) Fantasy Baseball is nutty. I am still chugging along with my teams. All of them. Many of them are doing quite good actually. I have received stellar seasons from players like Alfonso Soriano, Ryan Howard, Miguel Cabrera, Carlos Zambrano, Francisco Liriano, and many more. I’ve made a lot of moves in all of my leagues and in many cases I am atop the standings sitting pretty. It’s nuts and it takes up a good chunk of my mornings. But I have the time and I dig it so whatever.

3) My quest continues.

4) Live actions sports in the morning (like Tour de France, the World Cup, Wimbledon, and others) is awesome. Whoever invented sports in Europe so I could have something awesome to watch on TV in the mornings was a very very smart man. It’s bad enough that Cold Pizza is still in the middle of a 6 week hiatus.

5) The World Cup is awesome. Looks like an all European finale. Germany vs Italy and Portugal vs France. Who do you think will win?

Okay thats all for now..

MLB Fantasy Overload

Okay so I just realized that now I have a grand total of 64 Fantasy Baseball Teams. All on Yahoo. Recently midseason leagues have been forming and I signed up for a lot of those. Yahoo allows you to have 4 teams per yahoo id for each fantasy sport of the year. I play all the big ones. (shakin head in a sideways-swivel motion). I am the Big One.. Anyway.. Before the midseason drafts which started a few weeks ago I had only 24 teams on 6 ids. Well, I got caught up in the midseason drafts cause I love drafting, and I just love having super sick teams of players who are just heating up right now. I had several big big targets and several key drafts that should enable all of those teams to succeed well. It’s not like I just pick the teams and them leave them. (although i did forget about 4 of my basketball teams last season, only did 12, got bored, forgot).. Anyway. most of my original 24 are doing pretty well, many of them are leading their leagues or very close. I do have a few sticky teams that I am trying to finangle because my guy I took in the draft either isn’t performing or hasn’t yet. I’m expecting a big second half for many key players.. Okay so anyway, I drafted 40 more teams and now have 64 teams.. Here are a few of my key targets and many of the players I have on my fantasy teams..

In the drafts this would have been my top 5 regardless of what position I had.
1. Alfonso Soriano, Washington Nationals, 2B-LF-OF
2. Alex Rodriquez, NY Yankees, 3B
3 .Vladimir Guerrero, Los Angeles Angels, RF-OF
4. Manny Ramirez, Boston Red Sox, LF-OF
5. Jason Bay, Pittsburgh Pirates, LF-CF-OF

A typical team of mine looks like this.
C Joe Mauer / Brian McCann / Johnny Estrada
1B Ryan Howard / Paul Konerko
2B Alfonso Soriano / Chase Utley
3B Nomar Garciaparra / Chipper Jones
SS Miguel Tejada / Edgar Renteria / Hanley Ramirez
OF Grady Sizemore / Carl Crawford / Carlos Lee
OF Vlad Guerrero / Andruw Jones / Manny Ramirez
OF Jermaine Dye / Corey Patterson / Eric Byrnes / Scott Posednik / Jeff Francouer / Johnny Damon / Alex Rios
Util David Ortiz / Jose Castillo /Jose Reyes / Travis Hafner / Dan Uggla / Felipe Lopez / Chone Figgins / Jimmy Rollins / etc
SP Carlos Zambrano / Pedro Martinez / Mike Mussina / Roger Clemens / CC Sabathia / Bartolo Colon / Francisco Liriano / Jerad Weaver / John Smoltz / Tim Hudson
RP Jonathon Papelbon / Mariano Rivera / BJ Ryan / Bobby Jenks / Akinori Otsuka

NFL Fantasy Results 2005

I have been sitting on this data for a while now. I’m just gonna post it now cause I’m more than months behind anyway so what’s the difference. Not sure exactly how many of these leagues I was the commish for (at least 60% I’d say) but each league had a slightly different point value system. That made things difficult at times because I certainly couldn’t keep the leagues straight. I a league that I joined that the commish changed the settings post draft to reward all his kick/punt returners he drafted. That league was bullshit but I still counted in this tally.

This is the toughest time of the year for fantasy players like me.
Baseball just started (i have 20 teams)
Hockey and Basketball fantasy playoffs have been going on for the past few weeks (i have a bunch of teams in both)
It’s tough. But I’m doing okay. So that’s good.

Fantasy Update

Daunte Culpepper is out. I spent very high on Daunte this year in a couple fantasy leagues. I know I drafted him at least #1 overall in a few drafts. I wouldn’t wish an injury upon anyone but he was having a horrible season. I’m sure he was on the Viking Party Boat.

Heath Miller, Steelers just scored a touchdown in the Monday Night Game against the Ravens. I’ve got him tonight and Willie Parker. I need about 20 points.

Other than that I have no update. Just needed to vent my frustrations with Daunte.
I was thinking it about it too..
I am never drafting a Quarterback in the first round. Ever again.
I will take two running backs in the first two rounds every single year.
Every single time.
Even if I only need 1.
Straight up.
So remember that.
Even number 1.

I have Payton Manning on a few teams. He hasn’t done much either. But he still could. I’m not too worried with him. Wish sometimes I had the Edge over Payton, but oh well.

That and this is a tough week without the Falcons and Colts playing. I have a lot of Falcons and Colts. I dumped Indy’s Kicker for Jay Feely of the Giants which turned out to be the kicker pick of the week.
Good luck all. Be good.
